They ensured passengers’ safety and often provided a touch of luxury in upscale establishments. However, with the evolution of technology, automated elevators equipped with user-friendly buttons and safety features have become the norm, phasing out the elevator operator’s charming yet now redundant role.  

Milkmen

There was a time when the sound of clinking glass bottles signaled the milkman’s arrival. These individuals delivered fresh milk daily right to the doorstep. But with the rise of supermarkets, online grocery shopping, and vast refrigeration capabilities, the traditional milkman’s route has dwindled. People now have access to diverse dairy products at their fingertips, making door-to-door milk delivery a nostalgic memory.

In the era before electronic computing devices, “human computers” were individuals—often women—tasked with manually solving complex mathematical equations. Their work was crucial for various industries, including astronomy and engineering. However, as digital technology advanced, sophisticated computer systems emerged, executing calculations at speeds previously unimaginable, thus rendering manual computation obsolete.

With technological advancements, automated pin-setting machines were introduced, ensuring efficiency and consistency, leaving the manual pinsetters a mere memory in the history of bowling.

In the days before modern refrigeration, ice cutters braved frozen lakes and ponds, harvesting natural ice blocks. These blocks were then stored in insulated icehouses and distributed to households for cooling.
