You can tell if someone is a good person based on their words and actions. You can also use the same standard to determine if someone isn’t a good person. But what should you be looking for? An online community asked its members to describe the characteristics of someone who isn’t a good person, and the results were eye-opening.
1. Never Takes Ownership
Whenever something goes wrong due to their actions, they never take responsibility for it. “Nothing is ever their fault,” says someone in the thread. Hearing someone play the blame game always gets old very quickly.
2. Extreme Envy
Feeling envious of someone else’s success is human nature. But when a person can’t bring themselves to be happy for another person’s good fortune, that’s a huge red flag about their character.
3. Public vs. Private Treatment
If someone treats you well in public but proceeds to treat you in the exact opposite way in private or vice versa, that’s a sign of who they are, comments one person. When someone shows you that side of themselves, take them at face value and stay far, far away from them.
4. They Never Apologize
A classic sign that you may be dealing with someone who isn’t a good person is their inability or unwillingness to apologize. They’ll say something along the lines of “I’m sorry that you have a problem with my actions” or “I’m sorry that you feel that way,” a contributor remarks.
5. It’s All About Me, Me, Me
Everything is always about them because they believe they are the center of the universe. They are always the hero or the victim in their endless stories about themselves and their perceived greatness.
6. They Can Dish It Out, But They Can’t Take It
Have you ever met someone who is quite vocal in their unjust and often mean-spirited criticisms about everyone else but is hypersensitive to even the gentlest critiques about themselves? That’s a good indicator of someone you don’t want in your circle of friends.
7. They’re Always Right and Are Never Wrong
Know-it-alls turn many people off. An even bigger turnoff is those who always insist they are correct, even when they are dead wrong but refuse to admit it. There’s no shame in confessing you don’t know something or are wrong, but it’s bad form to be incapable of either.
8. They Use Other People
“They remember you are their friend only when they need something from you,” a participant in the discussion writes. The same goes for people who only treat others well because they believe they can get something out of them or otherwise benefit from knowing them. No one likes to be used that way.
9. Boasts About Bad Behavior
Someone who takes pride in deceiving others to the point of bragging about it isn’t even a remotely good person. Acting as if they’re smarter than everyone else for pulling a fast one tells the world how unethical they are.
10. Justifying The Unjustifiable
Someone who consistently says or does offensive things to others, and when they’re called on it, they attempt to justify their inappropriate words and actions by saying, “It was just a joke.” Being disrespectful is never a joke.
11. Denigrating Service Workers
Nothing screams “I’m a bad person” like treating service industry workers as if they’re beneath them. Mistreating a restaurant server, cleaner, trash collector, etc., when they perform a valuable service says a lot about their true nature, which isn’t pretty.
12. Gossips About Others
Finally, another sign that someone you know isn’t of good character is if they talk trash about other people behind their backs. Remember, they give you the same treatment when you do not hear.
