Sometimes, you have to worry about scams, questionable return policies, and vetting trustworthy sellers, and that’s before the bidding even starts. It’s no surprise that many people opt for the predictability and convenience of paying a little more for something new. However, if you know how to shop wisely, you can still find great deals on eBay while avoiding common pitfalls.
However, honing your eBay shopping skills is a must if you’re a collector or someone who likes to shop for the rare or unique. Check the Deals Section
eBay has a deals section right at the top of the home page. Deals are updated often, so it’s a great place to find bargains. You can browse specific categories or use the search option to find exactly what you want.
Look at Seller Feedback
Unfortunately, not every eBay seller is reputable, so be sure to check the seller’s profile before you make a bid or purchase. Look for a positive feedback rating of at least 98% as long as the seller has sold to more than three or four people.
Numbers Do Matter
Along with the positive feedback, check to see how many people have rated the seller. If the favorable rates are from hundreds of buyers, it’s a pretty safe bet the seller is legitimate. Of course, there will be exceptions. For example, someone just clearing out their closet may only have sold a few items. So, it’s important to use your best judgment.
Look for Top-Rated Plus Sellers
If you’re new to eBay or just worried about buying securely, look for the Top-Rated Plus icon. It looks like a county fair ribbon and is placed next to listings. Top-rated Plus sellers are very experienced in selling on eBay and have an exemplary track record. They will ship items within 24 hours and offer 14-day returns for a full refund.
Check What Like Items Have Sold For
If you find something you like, check what other items have sold for to ensure you don’t pay too much. To do this, search for the item and then scroll down to where it says “Show Only” on the results page. Then, choose “Complete Listings.” You’ll then get a page showing the sold prices in green and those that didn’t sell in black.
Shop for Refurbished Items
Many big manufacturers sell refurbished items with warranties on eBay. You can find home electronics at up to 50% off regular prices, so it’s a great way to score a deal. And because the items usually come with a warranty, you’re covered in case something breaks.
Do Your Research
Even if you find the exact item you’re looking for, research before bidding or buying. There may be more than one seller, and prices, shipping costs, and return or refund options may differ between sellers. Also, read the product description carefully and look closely at the photos to make sure you know the condition of what you’re buying.
Buy It Now
You don’t have to go through the bidding process to buy on eBay. Look for a “Buy It Now” icon if you’d rather just buy something. This allows you to pay the listed price instead of dealing with bidding. Even though it says “Buy It Now,” you can negotiate. Suggest a lower price than the listed amount. Many sellers will quickly accept the offer.
Set Up Alerts
If you’re looking for something that you can’t find on eBay, you can set up an alert that will send you an email if something is listed that matches your search. It’s easy to do, just click the heart on the left of “Save this search”. When products related to your search are listed, eBay will let you know.
Filter for Sale Items
The advanced search section allows you to filter for items on sale. Advanced Search is next to the Search button. Type in the item you’re looking for and then check Sale Items. You’ll then only see discounted search results.
Use the eBay App
The eBay app allows you to search for the best price on almost anything, no matter where you are. To use it, you just need to snap a photo of an item you’re interested in. The app then searches eBay listings and provides you with matches. You can also scan a price tag barcode to compare prices.
Shop Locally for Items Expensive to Ship
If you’re looking for items that you know will be expensive to ship, set a search radius under “Item Location.” This will only provide search results within a set number of miles from your location. If you find something you like, you can contact the seller to pick it up instead of having it shipped.
