It’s important for couples to go on dates and spend meaningful time together, but dates aren’t always budget-friendly.
If you’re on a tight budget or trying to save money, fancy dinner dates and lavish outings may not be accessible. Nevertheless, you and your partner can still plan enjoyable and memorable date nights together.
These budget-friendly date ideas are great for spending romantic time together without breaking the bank. Most of these cost less than $20, and some are completely free, and it doesn’t get more budget-friendly than that.
1. All-Out Movie Night
This classic budget date night idea is a wonderful go-to when you’re low on funds. You have to do it right, though. That means this date has to be more than picking a random movie on HBO.
Instead, set up blankets, pillows, and cushions on the floor and make an assortment of traditional movie theater snacks or food that is on theme with the film. Finally, choose a good movie neither of you has seen, such as a classic romance like Casablanca or a brand-new movie.
2. Outdoor Picnic
A picnic is always a sweet date idea, as it’s intimate and endearing. You can have a picnic anywhere, even in your backyard or on your living room floor. All you need is a blanket and something to nibble on.
However, we recommend finding a more attractive location, like a spot with mountains, ocean, or other natural views. When in doubt, a local park with nice greenery is a fantastic choice.
3. Board Game Night
The two of you can engage in a friendly competition with a serious board game night. We recommend picking a game designed specifically for two players, not Monopoly or Clue.
Guess Who?, Battleship, Scrabble, or various card games are great options. Set up some food, drinks, and music, and see who the master of games is in the relationship — just keep it lovey and civil.
4. Backyard Camping Trip
People like to say that camping is cheap, but campsites can charge as much as $100 for a spot, and you have to spend money on gas and many other things. Camping can be cheap if you do it right outside your door.
If you have a backyard, you can set up a little campsite and enjoy a night under the stars together. Maybe roast marshmallows, eat hot dogs, watch a movie on your laptop, or just chat.
5. Cheap Sports Game
You don’t have to buy $200 tickets to an NFL game to have a fun sports date with your partner. Most areas have minor league teams that charge a pittance for tickets so that you can save money there.
You don’t have to buy any drinks or food, and tickets are as little as $3 at some places. Even MLB games can be crazy cheap. Look for weeknight tickets because those are usually the most affordable.
6. Couple’s Hike
For outdoorsy, adventurous couples, a hike is a great way to spend one-on-one time together and exercise. If you have a dog, they can come along for the trip.
While we think a hike is probably more memorable and specific, it doesn’t have to be a serious hike. It could be a leisurely walk in the park, around your neighborhood, or on a beach.

7. Neighborhood Decoration Sightseeing
Depending on where you live, your neighbors may go all out for holidays. If your neighborhood comes to life with decorations around certain holidays, you can go sightseeing and compare houses.
Drive around with hot chocolate and look at Christmas decorations, or take a walk to check out the Halloween decor. To make this activity more formal, rank each house’s decorations and crown a winner at the end.
8. Farmer’s Markets
While the produce and goodies at farmer’s markets can be expensive, you don’t have to spend a dime to enjoy the atmosphere. Walk around your nearest farmer’s market and enjoy the buzzing atmosphere of locals interacting.
If you want to take something home, one or two items won’t be too pricey. Grab a fancy coffee or fresh apple to relish while walking around. This activity is a fun date idea and engages you in the local community.
9. Seasonal Nature Drive
If the autumn leaves change color near you or the spring blossoms are dazzling, take a scenic drive together at the turn of the seasons. Drive past orange, yellow, and red trees or a blooming garden.
This idea can also apply to winter scenery, like snowcapped mountains or any other seasonal occurrence. It’s a brilliant opportunity to take beautiful pictures and enjoy each other’s company.
10. Admire the Stars
Is there anything more romantic than looking at the stars with your lover? Maybe it’s a bit cliche, but we love it. Ideally, you should find a clear sky, not an area close to a major city.
Look for certain stars and constellations, or make up your own. Download a constellation chart, or just wing it and see what you can find in the sky. We recommend bringing a blanket to sit on, but other than that, you don’t need anything for this date.
11. Beach Day
If you live near a beach, you and your partner can spend the day lounging in the sun and splashing in the water. Public beaches are typically affordable, costing only a few dollars to park and zero dollars for entry.
You don’t need anything but some towels and sunscreen to enjoy a day at the beach. It’s one of the cheapest all-day things you can do together. Plus, it’s a sensational way to unwind and reset.
12. Challenging Puzzle
This idea is excellent because it encourages teamwork and collaboration. Depending on your puzzle skills, you can get a simple 25-piece, moderate 100-piece, or challenging 1,000-piece puzzle.
With a large puzzle, we recommend setting it up in a space where you can leave it for several days. If you don’t finish the first night, your puzzle date nights can continue until you complete your masterpiece.
13. Visit an Orchard or Farm

Most bar trivia nights don’t require an entry fee so that you can play for free. You probably need to buy at least one beer from the establishment, but that still means you can have a fun night out for less than $20.
There’s likely one bar or restaurant near you that offers weekly trivia. You can become regulars and start a trivia tradition that tests your knowledge in an entertaining setting.
16. Master a New Recipe
We’re not talking about making the same old chicken broccoli Alfredo that you’ve made a million times. No, for this idea, you need to think outside your routine.
Make something challenging and fancy, like one of Julia Child’s famous recipes, like beef bourguignon. If you prefer something sweet, bake something tricky, like French macarons or babka. It’s a challenge you can tackle as a team.
17. Explore a New Town
If you and your partner want to get out of the house, you can find a nearby town that you haven’t visited. Maybe they have a town center with local shops and cute eateries.
You don’t have to buy anything or spend money; you can simply see what this new town offers. However, spending a few dollars on a cup of coffee or a fun trinket isn’t a bad idea.
