Everyone loves receiving gifts regardless of the occasion. Whether it’s a birthday or Christmas, gifts are the perfect way to express love and affection.

While getting gifts is always fun, giving them is a different matter. Picking the right item and keeping it within the budget may be challenging.

With some creativity and extra effort, even the most frugal gifting can go a long way. Here are some ideas for gifts that’ll soften the hearts of whoever receives them and not leave anyone broke afterward.

1. Teacup Candles

Getting ready-made scented candles can be super pricey. However, making teacup candles is not only affordable but also more personalized. Beautiful vintage teacups can be purchased from flea markets or thrift stores for a dollar or so.

With just a little melted gulf wax and some scented oil, you’ll have a great scented candle as a gift. To add a pop of color, add a few drops of any dye or even crayon. Make sure not to add too much crayon, or the candle will have that unique Crayola fragrance.

2. Photo Coasters

Few things are more thoughtful than a gift made from custom photos. People can make photo coasters by using any ceramic tiles they have.

Print a picture of a favorite memory with that person and apply it to the tile with multiple layers of Mod Podge. Acrylic sealers make these coasters waterproof and long-lasting.

3. Hollow Book Storage

There’s something mysterious and intriguing about hidden book spaces that only a few know about. Any old hardback book can be converted into a secret storage as a gift.

Brush the edges of the pages together with a white glue and water mixture. Once they stick together, cut away the pages inside while leaving a border around them.

4. Custom Fridge Magnets

No fridge is complete without magnets and pictures. This perfect gift combines both and lets people give personal pictures as fridge magnets.

Whether it’s an inside meme or a picture of both of you together, place the picture right side down on a marble. With just enough Mod Podge, the picture will stick in place, and all that will be left is to add a magnet at the end.

5. Homemade Jam

Handmade gifts always hold a more significant place in people’s hearts than those only bought. Rather than purchasing jam from the store, people can make large batches of jam at home and give those instead.

Glass mason jars are inexpensive storage pots for jam. Tie a ribbon around the neck and add a small customized card to tie it all together.

6. Hand Beaded Necklaces

Jewelry can be expensive, but individual beads and charms bought in large quantities garner a much lower price. People can pick colors and designs they know the other person will love.

Stringing these beads together makes a great hand-beaded necklace for loved ones. It can also be a fun activity to do together, so the gift becomes the experience of making it.

7. Magazine Subscription

In a way, prebought subscriptions are gifts that keep on giving each month. Multiple magazine subscriptions are always on sale somewhere online.

The options are endless, and people can pick according to their favorite interests. Magazine subscriptions are typically cost-effective and a joy to read for some. Depending on the person, a magazine subscription can be a lifesaver or incredibly dull, so make sure to do your research.

8. House Plants

A pop of green brightens up any room. Plants are perfect for the job and come in all shapes and sizes. Smaller plants and succulents cost less than $20 and come in adorable little pots.

Getting sturdy plants that last long and don’t need to be cared for regularly is the best choice for minimalists. Anyone who wants to go the extra mile can paint the plant pot themselves. If your recipient has small children or pets, make sure the plant you give is non-toxic if ingested.

9. Booklight

Book lovers often have more books than one can imagine. Their extensive collection makes it difficult to buy books for them.

Instead of giving them another book, people can give book lights. They are cheaper than books, and these lights are more practical. No book lover will have to worry about reading in the dark ever again.

10. Portable Bluetooth Speakers

Everyone should be able to play their personal soundtrack no matter where they go. What better way to do so than with portable Bluetooth speakers?

Portable speakers can be used anywhere. People can buy retro speakers for a vintage look or funky ones for a unique gift. Most of the smaller portable speakers are affordable and easy to find online. Your life is a movie, provided you can play your soundtrack whenever and wherever you want.

Playlists are a separate love language of their own in today’s generation. There’s nothing more personal than creating a playlist of songs that remind you of someone and any special memories.

Go to your music app of choice and pick songs that resonate with you and your loved ones. Make sure to choose a cover image, too. You can also go old-school and burn the playlist on a CD as a gift.

12. Personalized Mugs

It’s hard to go wrong with giving mugs. They’re a classic, budget-friendly gift that can be creative. Instead of giving just another plain mug, people can hand-paint it.

Many online websites also offer custom personalized mugs. They print custom images on the mug, such as a picture of their favorite singer or a quotation.

13. Homemade Baked Goods

Buying ingredients and baking a large batch of cookies at home is much more affordable than buying expensive ones from the bakery. Homemade baked goods also showcase the time and effort that a person puts in for a gift.

Who doesn’t like baked treats? You can gift them in decorative jars or plates. Just try some out beforehand to make sure they’re yummy.

14. Socks

There’s no such thing as having too many socks. Socks are budget-friendly and necessary, no matter who the gift is for. There are a wide variety of colorful socks to choose from.

Knitted socks are an excellent gift for cold days. Meanwhile, funky socks make for a good laugh and a warm memory. People can also get plain white socks and customize them with fabric paints.

15. Soaps

Many consider practical gifts to be the best kind. Soaps will never be wasted or discarded, and they are always helpful to the person receiving them. They’re a versatile gift befitting any occasion.

Instead of buying regular soaps, homemade soaps are more fun to give as gifts. Homemade soaps are also available online, with some offering personalized scents and colors.
