One millennial puts it all in perspective. “The 90s were special to me because we had all of the elements of a ‘classic childhood’ but were literal pioneers with tech,” explains one woman.
Everyone Was Optimistic Back Then
Compared to the present day, many older millennials remember feeling much more optimistic about the future in the 90s. From the economy to technological advances to the rise of the middle class, there was a lot to get excited about, leading to most people feeling generally happy about where society was heading.
The Golden Age of Nickelodeon
If millennials agree on one thing, it’s that the 90s were fantastic because they coincided with the golden age of Nickelodeon! It’s hard to argue: Doug, Rugrats, Ren & Stimpy, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, and Clarissa Explains It All was just a handful of television shows that put smiles on kids’ faces, 30 minutes at a time.
Airports Were Exciting
Before increased security measures made going to the airport a trying experience, the simple act of going to the airport was exciting in the 90s! “Waiting for arrivals at the airport at the gate was amazing,” explains one woman. “There was this feeling it came with. I remember seeing my mom come off a plane after two weeks away from us. It was so emotional.”
The Advent of the Internet
The internet ushered in a new age of excitement throughout millions of millennials. For many, the 90s is synonymous with exploring the internet and uncovering something new nearly every time you log on. While millennials didn’t like their download speeds, they loved everything about becoming acclimated to a connected world.
The Music Was Amazing
From Nirvana to Britney Spears — and every artist, musician, and band in between — the 90s was home to countless incredible music. It was an era represented by many musical genres, and far too many people miss this age of music. In the eyes of many millennials, no current bands can top the bands that became popular in the 90s.
Every Day Was an Adventure
For kids growing up in the 90s, every day had the potential to be an unforgettable adventure. What a feeling! “I remember knocking on my friends’ doors and talking to their parents to see if they could come out and ride bikes,” recalls one man. “We’d go on adventures, end up near a river, throwing rocks or hitting them with sticks like a baseball. Not a care in the world.”
No Social Media
Many people blame social media for declining mental health in 2023. Fortunately, the 90s are unique to older millennials because social media didn’t exist yet! In the minds of millions, it felt like everyone was more happy back then.
It Was Delightfully Unhinged
Whether it was bizarre cartoons, the advent of “extreme” sports, or the unexpected popularity of professional wrestling, many people loved the 90s because it was so weird! “My friend put it perfectly,” reveals one older millennial. “The 90s were a special unhinged time where nothing was off limits and being weird or offbeat ruled.”
Movie Night Was Amazing
Whether you were watching with family or friends, nothing was better than movie night. Millennials fondly remember piling onto the couch with microwave popcorn and enjoying classic 90s films. Of course, the best part was that nobody was distracted by their cell phones!
Mall Culture
Growing up in the 90s meant you spent countless hours at the mall with friends. Some people lament the fact that American malls have changed over the years. “Back then, there were so many people at the malls, you’d see people you knew, and you’d meet new people talking at the bookstore,” recalls one millennial. “People seemed nicer then, too.”
9/11 Hadn’t Happened Yet
Millions confess that the world irrevocably changed after September 11, 2001. Life seemed different after that date. Many millennials admit they would travel back in time in a heartbeat, as 9/11 brought unexpected fear, sadness, and pessimism into their lives.
