Assisted living is a housing option for people with disabilities and adults over the age of 65 who can’t or don’t want to live independently. Assisted living facilities offer services that include help with day-to-day activities, healthcare help, and monitoring to ensure residents are happy, healthy, and safe.
Unfortunately, assisted living is expensive. The average annual cost of assisted living in the US is about $55,000. In Missouri, which is the least expensive state for assisted living, the average yearly cost is $36,000. Many states are much more costly than that.
We used information from Datapandas to put together a list of 14 states with the highest assisted living costs and senior living to find the states with the highest nursing home costs.
District of Columbia
The District of Columbia is the most expensive state for assisted living. The average yearly cost is $83,730. Nursing home costs are also high, at about $168,108 a year.
Alaska
Yearly assisted living costs in Alaska average $81,960. Nursing homes in Alaska are much more expensive and average $427,400 a year.
Rhode Island
Rhode Island is almost as high as Alaska for annual assisted living costs at $81,915. Nursing home costs are much lower than in Alaska, at approximately $ 167,300 annually.
Massachusetts
Massachusetts is an expensive state to live in, no matter what age you are. The average cost of a house is about $610,000, so it’s no surprise that it is number four on this list. Assisted living in Massachusetts will cost about $78,000 a year, and nursing home costs can run upwards of $180,400 a year.
New Jersey
New Jersey is also known for being an expensive state to live in. Expect to pay almost $78,000 a year for assisted living and almost $160,000 for nursing home care.
New Hampshire
A little less expensive than New Jersey, but not by much, assisted living in New Hampshire will run about $72,600 a year. Nursing home costs can run more than $157,000 a year.
Washington
Washington isn’t much lower than New Hampshire for assisted living. You can expect to pay about $72,000 a year. Nursing home care is slightly higher than in New Hampshire at almost $170,000 a year.
Delaware
The average yearly cost of assisted living in Delaware is almost $72,000, almost the same as in Washington. However, nursing home care is less expensive than in Washington, with a yearly cost of about $147,000.
Maine
Maine is another expensive state to live in. The average home is about $400,00, and assisted living is also quite high, at $70,300 a year. Nursing home care is just as expensive and will run about $162,500 or more annually.
Hawaii
Are you planning to retire in Hawaii? You can expect to pay about $64,500 a year for assisted living and almost $151,000 a year for a nursing home.
California
Yearly assisted living costs in the sunny state of California can cost about $63,000. Nursing home care is also expensive, at about $163,500 a year.
Vermont
Vermont costs about the same as California for assisted living. You should expect to pay about $63,000. Nursing home care is higher, though, at almost $175,000 each year.
Virginia
Virginia is another state where the average yearly cost is about $63,000. However, nursing home care is less expensive than both California and Vermont. Costs in both states are almost $126,000 a year.
Connecticut
Connecticut is the last state on our list. You should expect to pay about $61,550 a year for assisted living. However, while assisted living might be lower than other states on this list, nursing home care is among the highest at almost $205,000 a year.
