In a perfect world, every worker would earn (Most Grueling Professions) a living wage or at least a salary matching their job’s toughness. Sadly, that isn’t the case, with the most stressful jobs often paying the lowest wages. An online forum discussed which occupations are the most demanding jobs that pay well below their worth. Home Health and Personal Care Workers
Caregivers for adults with emotional, mental, and physical disabilities deal with situations that can be potentially dangerous for them personally, such as dealing with aggressive, agitated clients. These workers must maintain their composure in a physically and emotionally exhausting occupation, often for just over $30,000 annually.
Paraeducators
Also known as teacher assistants, these professionals work in child daycare centers and schools to assist teachers with students in their classes and children in their care. Paraeducators are often part-time jobs without benefits. Even if they work full-time, their salaries are still far below what they deserve for working in frequently overcrowded classrooms.
Adjunct Professors
College and university professors with tenure earn a decent salary, have excellent benefits, and have job security. Adjunct professors are in the opposite camp. They make low to below-poverty wages, receive no benefits, and have no job security. It’s not unusual for adjuncts to teach at multiple colleges and universities each semester to make ends meet.
Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians
Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) perform miraculous, lifesaving work around the clock, without fail. Yet, they are among the lowest-paid professions in the medical field. There are some places where paramedics and EMTs earn good wages. Still, the median annual salary for these healthcare workers is shockingly less than $40,000.
Certified Nursing Assistants
One of the most critical roles in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and nursing homes is the certified nursing assistant (CNA). They provide direct care to patients, performing duties such as bathing, feeding, and other activities of daily living. Despite the requirement that CNAs qualify for state certification and the profession’s demands, like paramedics and EMTs, these positions are among the lowest paid in healthcare, especially compared to nurses and physicians.
Social Workers
Social work, in general, is an undervalued, overworked, and underpaid profession despite usually requiring, at minimum, a master’s degree to practice in the field. Social workers can be found in schools, assisting youth from at-risk families, and also work for agencies that help families in crisis. Not only do these workers regularly see people when they are in the worst circumstances in their lives, but they’re on the clock days, nights, and weekends for a salary that doesn’t even begin to cover the trauma they endure.
Custodians, Janitors, and Building Cleaners
Speaking of an occupation that isn’t valued or paid enough, custodians, janitors, and building cleaners are the backbone of any workplace, whether it’s a hospital, school, or office building. They often go unnoticed until they are needed or if they aren’t there. It’s incredible how much of a mess will pile up when they’re off for the day or week or, heaven forbid, quit altogether.
Veterinarian Technicians and Technologists
When you look at the amount of education, training, and certifications required to be a veterinarian technician, not to mention the student loan debt, it’s easy to see that these careers are woefully underpaid. They take care of animals to ensure they stay in good health. They also care for sick and injured animals, tasks that can take an emotional toll on anyone.
Childcare Workers
If you’re familiar with the current childcare crisis in the U.S., it’s mainly because there’s a shortage of available workers and child daycare centers. The driving force behind this crisis is the low wages paid to those who care for children too young to attend school. They usually earn less than $15.00 an hour, which is a travesty that needs to be remedied.
Security Guards
Even though they protect large populations of strangers in malls, office buildings, concert venues, etc., security guards are habitually disrespected and woefully underpaid. They keep people and highly valuable property safe day and night, yet their salaries don’t come close to matching their significant responsibilities.
Animal Shelter and Rescue Workers
People who work in animal shelters or perform animal rescues are the unsung heroes of our society. Professionals in this occupation will describe their work as rewarding but heartbreaking. All you have to do is watch animal rescue videos online to see that. It’s a job many people couldn’t handle, and the fact that their median pay is less than $15 an hour is shameful.
Agricultural Workers
Anything related to farming is hard, thankless, and underpaid work. Some agricultural workers own their farms, and others don’t. Either way, it’s backbreaking work. Most Americans couldn’t imagine picking fruit and vegetables in harsh weather conditions for wages barely above the poverty level, yet these workers do so for everyone else’s benefit.
