Six Flags, New Orleans

Six Flags, New Orleans

Closed in 2005 after being seriously damaged by Hurricane Katrina, Six Flags New Orleans was covered in seven feet of water for over a month. Because of the damage, the park couldn’t afford to make repairs and reopen. Because of its creepy atmosphere, the site is now often used for movies and television.

Pripyat Amusement Park, Chernobyl, Ukraine

It is one of the most famous abandoned amusement parks today. Pripyat Amusement Park was due to open its doors in 1986. However, just a few days before the scheduled opening, a catastrophic nuclear disaster hit the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Locals were forced to evacuate because of high levels of radiation and could never return.

Built in the 1960s, Nara Dreamland was open until 2006, when it closed due to a low visitor count. When the park closed, everything remained intact. There are even still tables and chairs in the coffee shops and restaurants.

Land of Oz, North Carolina

Land of Oz is a 16-acre theme park dedicated to the Wizard of Oz. When it opened in 1970, it was very successful. However, interest declined quickly. A fire in 1975 destroyed parts of the park and was eventually abandoned. Land of Oz occasionally opens for visitors for a few days around Halloween.

The first water park built in Walt Disney World, Disney’s River Country, closed in 2001 after the New York 9/11 attacks negatively affected the tourism industry. The park is now left in ruins, making it one of two Disney parks that have been closed but not torn down.

Opened in 1953, this communist-run theme park provided free fun for everyone. The park operated for 40 years, surviving on funding from the communist party. However, it was forced to shut down in 1993 after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Could you imagine if the U.S. government funded Disney and we all got to visit for free?

In its day, Joyland was one of the largest amusement parks in Kansas. However, when ownership changed, the park fell into disrepair. After running for 55 years, Joyland closed its doors in 2006. It has since been partially demolished, but plenty of decaying buildings and rides remain.

Dunblobbin, Crinkley Bottom Theme Park, UK

Part of Noel Edmonds Crinkley Bottom Park, England’s first TV-themed park based on Mr. Blobby, a popular TV character in the 1990s, Dunblobbin was abandoned when the rest of the park was renovated and turned into a hotel. The park is rumored to be haunted and a favorite destination for ghost hunters.

Based on the book Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift, his park was only open for four years before closing because of low visitor numbers. Today, the enormous statue of Gulliver is slowly disintegrating, showing how the park is gradually decaying.

Opened in 2004 and closed in 2006, Ho Thuy Tien Waterpark is rumored to be cursed. There are stories of crocodiles abandoned and hungry in the water. Recently, there was talk of renovation, but nothing has happened since.

The German Democratic Republic’s only theme park was sold to entrepreneur Norbert Witte and his wife when the Berlin Wall came down. Ten years later, it went bankrupt, and Witte took six rides to Peru to start again in Lima.

Wonderland, Beijing

Despite two phases of construction, one in 1998 and the other ten years later. Wonderland never actually opened. It is now an outlet mall, but the original castle still stands.

Opened in 1981, Atlantis Marine Park was packed with water-based features, including pedal boats and live dolphin shows. However, after the 1987 stock market crash, the park was forced to close due to financial difficulties.

Chippewa Lake Amusement Park entertained visitors with various rides, including flying cafes, roller coasters, Ferris wheels, and carousels. However, in 1978, 100 years after opening, it was forced to close due to poor management.
