Reducing your utility bills is one of the smartest ways to ease financial stress. Newsflash: paying bills is the worst. The constant payment of necessary utility bills arguably hurts our wallets the most. What if there were a way to decrease our monthly utility bills? Good news — there is. In fact, there are many ways to do it.

These are a few no-nonsense, easy-to-implement ways to decrease your monthly utility bills. If you’ve been struggling with ever-increasing energy, internet, and water costs, pay close attention because you’re about to receive some well-deserved respite from ridiculous monthly bills.

1. Watch Less TV

As a lover of most television shows I’ve encountered, it hurts me to say this: Watching less TV will lower your energy bills. It’s simple science. While modern TVs are more efficient than models from decades ago, they’re still complex machines that consume a lot of electricity (especially if you watch a lot of TV).

For those without the willpower to ditch TV cold turkey, consider canceling a streaming service or two to help ease the transition. After all, you can’t binge yet another random Netflix series if you’re not subscribed to Netflix, right?

2. Consolidate Your Routine

Desperate times call for desperate measures, and any attempt to decrease your utility bills isn’t complete without overhauling your bedtime routine. It’s time to get creative. I’m officially a “brush your teeth while you shower” person.

Don’t fight it; embrace this new routine. You’ll realize how much water you save, and after seeing your water bill tick down each month, you’ll wonder why you didn’t start doing it a long time ago.

3. Embrace Natural Light

Artificial light is for suckers. See that giant, floating, molten orb in the sky? That’s the free version of recessed overhead lighting. Take advantage of it.

During the daylight hours (unless you live underground), keep energy costs low by opening your blinds and allowing sunshine to light the interior of your home. There’s nothing better than an airy, sun-filled atmosphere in your residence.

4. Wash Your Clothes in Cold Water

Heating water is an inefficient waste of time, but it doesn’t stop people from washing their clothes in a warm water cycle. Do yourself a favor and use your washing machine on cold-water cycles only; your savings will be appreciable.

Don’t worry. Modern-day detergent in a cold-water cycle will still wash your clothes just as well as warm (or hot) water. Ultimately, you won’t know the difference after a few washes.

5. Forego the Dryer

Speaking of washing clothes, if you want to save money on your monthly utility bills, there’s only one option: stop throwing your clothes into your dryer after taking them out of the washing machine. I know it sounds old-fashioned, but air-drying your clothes will prolong their life and dramatically lower your bills.

A typical home dryer uses far more energy than you would think, especially if you’re like me and run constant “fluff up” cycles to warm up clothes and towels you forgot to take out.

6. Keep the Heat Off

Unless you live in a prohibitively cold area, you could save on utilities by keeping your heat off. The obvious solution here is straightforward: wear an extra layer (or two) of clothing instead of turning on the heat. There’s arguably nothing more comfortable than lounging around in sweats, and you’ll love the money you save every month.

I remember a few times in college when I never turned on the heat because I had $20 to my name. It was a rough winter in Connecticut, but at least my utility bills were low.

7. Learn to Live Without Air Conditioning

The same logic should apply to air conditioning if you dedicate yourself to using your heater sparingly. A little sweating never hurt anyone, but running an air conditioner nonstop can severely dent your wallet.

The upside of learning to live without air conditioning is that you can lounge around in your underwear more often, which makes your days inarguably sexier. If that’s not luxury, I don’t know what is.

8. Lower Your Internet Speed

Take a cursory glance at any internet provider’s website. You’ll inevitably find enticing packages promising lightning-fast internet speeds you’re told to need. It makes sense, in a way: 500 megabits per second (or even one gig or more) sounds right up your alley, right?

One problem: no household needs speeds higher than 100 Mbps unless you live in a frat house or are a streaming legend. One of the easiest ways to lower your utility bill is to “downgrade” your internet speed. You won’t notice the difference.

9. Take Fewer Baths

I know, I know. Baths are one of the few joys of your life. I’m not telling you to eliminate them from your life entirely. I’m merely suggesting you stop taking so many of them in hopes of lowering your monthly water bill. There’s nothing more relaxing than a nice, warm bath after a hard day’s work, but do you know what’s even more satisfying than a bath? Paying next to nothing each month on your water bill.

10. Install a Smart Thermostat

It’s time to embrace the smart home revolution and lower your bills simultaneously. Installing a smart device like a Nest Thermostat will help manage your heating and cooling costs if you insist on using them throughout the year. Smart thermostats can automate the entire process and will learn to adapt to your schedule. These devices are home assistants dedicated to more efficient heating and cooling throughout your house.

The future is now, and purchasing a smart thermostat for your home is one of the most mindful and forward-thinking things you can do to reduce your monthly energy costs.

11. Install Solar Panels

Imagine bypassing your local energy company and creating electricity by harnessing the sun’s power. Does that sound crazy? If you install solar panels on your roof, it’s possible.

Solar panels aren’t cheap, though. With installation included, homeowners can expect to pay upwards of $30,000. The upfront cost is significant, but your utility bills will ultimately decrease.

12. Update Large Appliances

Do you still use decades-old kitchen appliances? If so, you owe it to yourself and your wallet to upgrade to newer, more energy-efficient models. A small investment now will lead to significant savings in the future.

Also, the new stainless-steel refrigerators, dishwashers, and other appliances look phenomenal in any kitchen. Who says no to increased energy efficiency and good-looking appliances?

13. Use Your Dishwasher Efficiently

I’m a terribly inefficient dishwasher, and I’m probably solely to blame for any uptick in my home’s monthly water bill. I rinse dishes to the point that they probably don’t need to be run through the dishwasher, and then I run the dishwasher when it’s only half full. I’m a monster. I need to change.

So let’s do it together. Let’s rinse our dishes minimally, only start a full load, and see our water bills go down together forever.

14. Lower Your Refrigerator’s Temperature

If your fridge’s internal thermometer is set near the max, you’re overcooling it. In 2024, all refrigerators should be set at a moderate temperature to keep food fresh for longer and reduce energy costs.

Although lowering the appliance’s temperature responsible for keeping perishable food cold may sound counterproductive, you needlessly use energy by setting your refrigerator’s internal thermostat too low. You won’t notice the difference like other things I’ve covered in this article.

15. Take Shorter Showers

I know this isn’t the advice you want to hear. Still, to lower our ever-increasing utility bills, you must make significant lifestyle adjustments.

Say goodbye to the days of 20-minute showers. Embrace the sub-five-minute shower session, and you’ll be rewarded with savings you didn’t even know existed.17 Sneaky Money-Saving Hacks You Can’t Afford to Miss
