Many people are obsessed with world history, not least because of the unanswered questions records may raise. These Unsolved Mysteries continue to captivate the imagination, leaving historians and enthusiasts alike pondering possible explanations and theories.

Mysterious, confusing, and all-around odd, countless historically recorded happenings do not make sense. It’s all utterly intriguing. 

1. Stonehenge

One of Earth’s most famous prehistoric monuments, the iconic Stonehenge, was constructed approximately four to five thousand years ago.

With materials taken from far and wide and multiple burials and shrines nearby, Stonehenge cannot shake the mystery of how and why it was built.

2. The Mary Celeste

1872, the Mary Celeste ship set sail for Italy from New York. It held 11 members, including the captain. Just weeks later, the boat was found adrift at full sail, void of inhabitants. Though theories are plentiful, there are no specific explanations for the odd disappearances. 

3. Cleopatra’s Tomb

Synonymous with Egyptian history, Cleopatra’s legacy was impactful. Her means of death is unknown but followed shortly after the suicide of her lover, Marc Antony. 

Cleopatra may have been buried alongside Marc Antony near ancient Alexandria, now submerged in water. Though extensive searches have occurred, we are still far from uncovering the mystery of where her tomb is located.

4. The Somerton Beach Body

1948, a well-dressed man was found on a beach near Somerton Park in Western Australia. Well-kept and neat, the man possessed some curious objects but no identification and no apparent cause of death. 

After 70 years, the man was finally identified through DNA tracking. 

5. The Bermuda Triangle

Covering about 500,000 square miles, the Bermuda Triangle is a fictitious section of ocean off the southeastern tip of Florida. Though many vessels navigated it safely, many vanished in the area without apparent cause. 

Pilots flying overhead have reported becoming disorientated, while ships have disappeared without warning signals. No cause has ever been named.

6. Dyatlov Pass Incident

In February 1959, nine hikers were found dead in Russia’s Ural Mountains. 

All were in unusual states of dress, with unexplained injuries, including missing eyes and tongues. Theories about radiation poisoning, avalanches, polar bears, and hypothermia have all been considered.

7. The Ark of the Covenant

The Ark of the Covenant was considered a holy vessel and is reverently mentioned in Christian and Jewish history.

Recorded to be kept in the Temple of Solomon, the Ark was subjected to the siege of Jerusalem by the Babylonians in 586 B.C. Thousands of years later, nobody knows what became of it.

8. Jack the Ripper

One of London’s most notorious serial killers, Jack the Ripper, was the name given to the individual who mutilated and killed more than five women in the late 1880s.  

Despite many investigations, no man was ever identified or charged with the crimes.

9. Hitler’s Missing Fortune

The stolen N*zi gold is a treasure hunter’s dream. N*zis supposedly dumped an estimated 5.6 billion dollars worth of gold into the waters of Lake Toplitz, hidden in a forest in the Alps. 

No evidence has come forth, so we may never know whether this story is historical or simply legend.

10. Voynich Manuscript

Discovered in 1912, the Voynich Manuscript stumped historians. The author filled the pages with unknown language, odd drawings of plants, women, and even zodiac signs.

The book remained a mystery until 2017, when history researcher Nicholas Gibbs cracked the code, learning it was a medieval textbook on women’s health. 

11. The Moai of Easter Island

Nearly 1,000 statues were carved out of stone, perhaps as early as 6 A.D., by a civilization that later vanished. While the process of creating these large and impressive formations has since been unraveled, the mysteries of this particular group of people still remain largely unresolved. 

12. Gardner Museum Heist

In March 1990, two men dressed as police arrived at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, Massachusetts. Within 81 minutes, they stole 13 pieces of art valued today at 500 million dollars. 

The art remains missing, and the museum continues to display empty frames where the pieces were once displayed.

13. Malaysian Airlines Flight 370

In 2014, a year in which air travel was mainly deemed safe, a commercial plane carrying 239 people vanished without a trace. There were no distress signals, and despite immense media coverage and plentiful theories, including terrorism, suicide, and oxygen deprivation, the incident remains a mystery.

14. The Tylenol Murders

The Chicago Tylenol Murders occurred in 1982. Seven people died within a matter of days after taking a Tylenol, which was found to have been laced with cyanide. The incident caused enormous financial repercussions for manufacturer Jonhson & Johnson, and though some criminals admitted fault, the actual killer has never been convicted.

15. The Circleville Letters

What started as a letter accusing a female bus driver of an affair soon led to violent accusations and threats. Subsequent letters, over 1,000 in total, were crude and violent. Some contained arsenic; others came in the form of posters. 

There is uncertainty that the man arrested was truly responsible as the letters continued even after he was jailed.

16. Flannan Isles Lighthouse

The Flannan Isles Lighthouse, situated west of Scotland, was the setting of the mysterious joint disappearance of three keepers. The true story was eventually turned into a film.

In December 1900, all three keepers vanished without a trace. Some theorize that a storm swept them to their deaths, while others speculated insanity or a physical brawl occurred.

17. The Nazca Lines

Considered one of Peru’s greatest mysteries, the impressive Nazca Lines take up 500 square kilometers and are possibly over 2,000 years old.

Only truly appreciated by air, the purpose of the images is unknown.

18. The Zodiac Letters

The so-called Zodiac Killer was headline news in California through the late 1960s. The killer wrote letters and produced identical cryptograms received by newspaper publications.

Over 50 years later, the cipher was cracked by amateurs. The message explained that the killer committed the murders to acquire slaves for the afterlife. No individual has ever been formally convicted for the killings. 

19. Antikythera Mechanism

Dated between 205 and 60 B.C., the Antikythera Mechanism was an early version of an analog computer. 

The device was only identified in 1905 after being discovered in a shipwreck. Researchers thought it may have been used to track astronomical movements, but the true extent of early Greek technological advancement may never be known.
