Everyone wants one thing in life and will try hard to secure it. We’re talking about happiness.
The hustle and bustle of daily life makes happiness seem hard to get. Many worry they will never find it.
It is not impossible, but it’s important to know the strategies to help achieve contentment bit by bit. There is no such thing as instant joy; you must build and grow it slowly.
Our list doesn’t include the cookie-cutter dot points we often hear, such as eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep, and exercising. We go beyond that and dive into the tips people don’t often discuss.
1. Acts of Kindness
Random acts of kindness are something people do each day but typically don’t even think about.
Random means that no planning is involved, and these are the most rewarding acts of kindness to engage in. This can take the form of helping someone load their groceries into their car or even flashing a simple smile to someone as they walk by.
A study by Jennifer Cheavens and David R. Cregg of Ohio State University shows that random kindness to others can help you feel happier and more positive. The study involved students performing three random acts of kindness twice a week for five weeks. The results showed the students had a reduction in depressive and anxious feelings and reported greater levels of satisfaction.
Doing something nice for someone triggers natural prosocial behavior, which works like a reward system. When you see the happiness on someone else’s face, you start to feel good knowing you have helped them.
2. Keep a Journal
Find a beautiful journal and pen and dedicate yourself to journal writing. Write down at least three things daily. These can be general positive thoughts, good deeds, or motivating phrases.
Dedicate 20 minutes daily to writing in your journal. It can be at night before bed or early in the morning with a fresh cup of coffee.
Identifying things that create joy can help us feel empowered, which turns negative thoughts into positive ones, Jada Carpenter of Purdue University reveals. Make it a part of your day to relax and write something meaningful in your journal.
3. Social Fitness
We know that sitting at home alone daily can make us feel dull and depressed. Compare that to the smile on your face when your friend comes over for a visit. Your mood is instantly uplifted.
Researchers from Harvard University revealed in a decade-long study that everyone needs social fitness for a balanced and happy life. The study has followed 724 men since 1938, with only 60 participants in their 90s remaining today.
The study shows a strong connection between happiness and good relationships with spouses, close family, and friends. Relationships are, therefore, important for your health and well-being.
“Personal connection creates mental and emotional stimulation, which are automatic mood boosters, while isolation is a mood buster,” project director Dr. Waldinger told the Harvard Health Blog.
Let’s think about how we feel when we catch up with an old friend and share funny memories. We don’t buy our social life; we create it, and like everything else, you need to maintain it. Dedicate time to seeing friends, talking to a neighbor, or sending a letter to a long-lost cousin.

4. Smile, Smile, Smile
Does everyone smile enough? Sometimes, it comes naturally. Occasionally, we only smile at those who smile at us first.
Smiling can help to create those warm inner feelings. Smiling can lower the risk of depression and decrease the severity of anxiety.
Laughter yoga is an excellent way to achieve this if you are not yet confident to smile at strangers. It is the art of voluntary laughter while doing yoga exercises in a playful atmosphere. It is a fun way to interact with others and learn how to improve well-being.
5. Taking Responsibility
Maintaining happiness means improving your life instead of waiting for people to do it for you. If you are to blame for something, take it on the chin and accept that you made a mistake.
Various studies claim we should never blame others as it leads to resentment, anger, and hatred. Happiness means you understand what your weaknesses are but also your strengths. Believe in yourself and continually work to change any negatives into positives.
Look after yourself and do what makes you happy.
Achieving Happiness Is in Your Grasp
Many believe you can gain contentment from money, sports cars, mansions, and other luxuries. We now know, however, that there is more to happiness than material things.
An enjoyable life is possible without all the material things by making small positive changes, enjoying life, smiling when possible, and making memories. We’ve got this!
