While driving through the mountains may sound tedious, the Parkway makes it enjoyable. Your family will be mesmerized by the jaw-dropping views. The best part is that driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway is free. Is your family more adventurous during the winter months? In that case, many portions of the Parkway are closed to traffic, allowing pedestrians to walk the road on foot. Don’t worry; it’s safe (and quite magical).
2. Visit a Pinball Museum
For some reason, many cities in North Carolina have a genuine affinity for pinball, resulting in a few fantastic pinball museums in Asheville and Hendersonville. Both locations are crowd-pleasers and perfect for families. If your kids don’t love playing unlimited arcade games and pinball machines for a low price all day, you should seriously consider trading in your children for better versions. All jokes aside, pinball museums are love letters to one of the best ways to spend your time, and you shouldn’t pass up the opportunity to experience one of them.
3. Visit the NASCAR Hall of Fame
Fans of one of the most popular American sports shouldn’t pass up a visit to the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Located in Charlotte, the Hall of Fame is a haven for race fans and an excellent opportunity for the family to learn about NASCAR’s history while experiencing immersive exhibits. It’s important to recognize how far we’ve come as a country regarding individual rights, and there’s no better place to do so than at the International Civil Rights Center & Museum in Greensboro. While it’s not like sliding down a watery rock formation in a national forest, sometimes a parent has to introduce a little education into their children’s lives. Fortunately, after an afternoon at the museum learning about civil rights, Greensboro offers many other activities and experiences for the whole family to enjoy.

Families who love exploring the great outdoors feel at home in North Carolina. It doesn’t matter where you travel to throughout the state; a breathtaking hike is just a few minutes away. Experienced hiking families will love the challenge of the Mount Mitchell Trail. At the same time, those preferring a more leisurely nature walk have almost unlimited options. Of course, the best part about hiking with the family is the price: you can’t beat a full day of outdoor family fun for the unbeatable price of zero dollars.

Although smaller critters are the stars of the show, the show also has bears and larger animals.

North Carolina is home to many breathtaking breaches, from the Outer Banks to Wilmington and everywhere in between. There are so many fantastic beaches to visit that families may as well pick one out of a hat; there are no “wrong” beaches. Some are more relaxed, while others have more engaging nightlife. All of them are perfect for families to spend making sandcastles and boogie-boarding.

As a parent, I know it’s crucial to introduce as much knowledge to your children as possible, and the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh is the perfect place to do so. From genuine dinosaur skeletons on display to interactive animal feeding sessions (and everything in between), a day at the museum is a cost-effective way to have fun and learn a thing or two. Furthermore, the museum’s best feature is music to the ears of countless parents: admission is free (although donations are graciously accepted).
13. Walk Behind a Waterfall
Being able to walk behind an honest-to-goodness waterfall may seem impossible. Thankfully, Dry Falls, located outside Highlands, North Carolina, allows anyone to do just that. The 75-foot-tall waterfall is in the Nantahala National Forest. Since it flows over a cliff, anyone can walk behind and underneath it. It makes for unforgettable photos and provides parents and kids with memories they’ll cherish forever.

North Carolina’s Outer Banks aren’t just a world-class ocean destination for beach lovers during the summer. The Outer Banks also boast thousands of wild horses who call the eastern shores of the state their home. Seeing these horses roam free in public areas never fails to take my breath away.
