Stepping out of your home can be expensive. When I get bored, I can’t help but want to go out. More times than not, when this happens, I overspend and spend money on things I don’t care about.
There are plenty of affordable hobbies to enrich your mind without breaking your wallet, though. Gone are the days of window shopping and over-swiping.
To curate this list, we chose family-friendly hobbies anyone can partake in. These hobbies are also affordable and can be done from or near your home.
1. Coloring Books

Coloring is a cheap and fun hobby. You don’t need to invest in super-expensive markers or pencils, and the same is true for coloring books. Coloring books can be as cheap as $1. This is a great way to relax your mind and create something without robbing your bank.
2. Running

Running is great for your heart and cost-effective. Except for buying running shoes and activewear, which most people already have, running is free.
You also don’t have to go far to run. If you live in an apartment with a gym, you can use the treadmill.
3. Dancing

Dancing is excellent exercise. Although there are dance classes, which can be costly, you can also learn on your own. There are plenty of dance tutorials online with step-by-step instructions.
What’s cheaper than plugging in headphones and dancing your heart out?
4. Reading

This hobby may confuse you. Reading isn’t expensive, or at least it doesn’t have to be. I’m a huge reader. Whenever I get a chance, I open a book.
To make this hobby even more affordable, you can stick with online subscriptions like Kindle Unlimited. Libraries are also a great option when you want to read for free. Some libraries even deliver books, so you don’t have to leave the comfort of your home.
5. Writing

Sometimes, reading and writing go hand in hand. But not all readers like to write. This fun hobby can give your wallet a break.
You don’t even need to write on paper. A more accessible way to write is by using your phone. I love writing ideas, poems, and short stories on my notes app.
6. Meditating

There are very few things you need to meditate on. Honestly, depending on your preference, you only really need yourself. This hobby is an excellent way to relax and save money.
The most you’ll need to purchase is a yoga mat. Guided meditations are available online on sites like YouTube.
7. Origami

Do you want to make beautiful animals and other objects with just paper? You only need scraps of paper, patience, time, and a YouTube video or two.
I’ve tried origami more than once. It’s a blast and easy to get sucked into. You’ll be surprised how much time passes as you fold and learn.
8. Gardening

Gardening is a tricky hobby. It isn’t exactly cheap, but there are plenty of ways to make it inexpensive. For instance, you can use the soil in your ground and amend it with compost from everyday ingredients.
Dollar Tree sells seeds cheaply during spring. You can buy four for $1. Another way to get seeds is to dry the seeds from your cooking. Green peppers from the grocery stores still have seeds. Just dry them.
9. Knitting

Knitting can teach you a lot about yourself. It’s a relatively difficult skill to pick up, requiring practice and patience. Knitting is also a low-cost hobby.
You can find knitting needles and yarn for a low price in most craft stores. They are even sold in some dollar and discount stores. Relaxing with a new hobby doesn’t have to break your bank.
10. Painting

Whenever I get a chance, I love to paint. I will say I’m not good at it. This hobby isn’t completely free, but it doesn’t have to cost a lot, either.
The internet has so many fun tutorials to try. Art materials can be bought at dollar and discount stores. You may even have old paint and brushes at home, sitting collecting dust.
11. Listening to Music

Music is a passion for many people. It’s easy to get lost in it, and it can feel like a way of life rather than just a hobby.
Like with other hobbies we chose, this one is easily accessible. If you have a phone with internet access, you can listen to music whenever you want. The most expensive things might be headphones and subscriptions like Pandora and Spotify.
12. Baking

Listen, I am never not trying a new recipe. Baking does incur some costs, but you can make bread, cookies, and cakes with just a few dollars. Flour is in nearly everything, and you can get a bag for $1 to $5, depending on the size.
Baking is a great way to try new foods and also move your body.
13. Journaling

Writing and journaling are similar, but they aren’t the same hobbies. While journaling includes writing, not all writing is journalistic. Journaling is a great way to get your ideas, emotions, and thoughts out on paper.
You can get creative and DIY a journal, adding color, sparkle, and flare. This doesn’t have to cost much, either. You probably have lots of materials in your home you aren’t using.
14. Learning Languages

Knowledge is a superpower, and you are never too old to stop learning. I love learning. Currently, I’m trying to learn Portuguese and Cantonese in my free time. In this day and age, language learning resources are available for free online.
This is a tricky hobby as some people learn best in formal classes. Still, you can download apps, listen to music, and watch movies and shows in a new language.
15. Bird Watching

Another tremendous, affordable hobby to enrich your life is bird watching. You can do this without traveling far. Take a walk in your neighborhood, and see what birds you can spot.
To learn more about birds in your local area, you can search for online guides or check out books from the library.
16. Walking

Running isn’t the same as walking. It might sound silly, but taking walks is also a hobby. And it’s affordable!
Walking is a great way to stretch, exercise, and clear your mind. You don’t have to stick to walking trails near your home. You can also plan trips to beautiful hiking trails.
17. Biking/Cycling

Biking isn’t entirely free, but it doesn’t have to hurt your wallet. You are good to go once you have a bike and some maintenance equipment (tire pump). All you need is a bike and yourself.
Cycling doesn’t have to be lonely. If you live in a major city, there is likely a cycling group and biking with friends is a lot of fun.
