No generation likes it when life passes by, but Gen X seems especially struck by the passage of time. Life in 2023 is so drastically different than what their generation grew up with that it’s easy to see why they miss the good old days. Recently, Gen X met in an online discussion to reveal everything they miss most about their era.
Life Without Social Media
Most Gen-Xers don’t understand the current generation’s obsession with social media. “I don’t understand the constant need for the world to know, and not care, about what I’m doing, what I’m eating, how I look in a swimsuit, what products I’m using, where I’m retaking vacation, and everything else,” expresses one woman. “Please, make it all go away.”
Privacy
Think of how much of their privacy the current generation gives up daily. From their lives being broadcast across the internet to online advertisers tracking their every move, privacy is a thing of the past. Generation X was arguably the last generation to have complete control over their privacy.
Roller Skating Rinks
Life seemed more innocent and heartfelt for Generation X. Many people who grew up in the ’70s and ’80s genuinely miss spending Friday nights at the roller skating rink with their friends. While there are still a few rinks in operation today, roller skating has decidedly gone out of fashion with each new generation.
Camping Out for Concert Tickets
Most Gen-Xers admit they wish the days of camping out for concert tickets would return. Although purchasing tickets over the internet is more convenient, they argue that the sense of community and anticipation from camping outside malls and box offices made the event even better. I can’t argue with this!
Mall Culture
For countless people who grew up in the ’80s, American mall culture was a prominent part of their lives. “I miss being dropped off at the mall at noon on Saturday to see a movie, go to McDonald’s, read Fangoria magazine on the floor of the bookstore, and hit the arcade until getting picked up before dinner,” reveals one man.
Dedicated Record Stores
Record stores are a relic from a bygone era due to the prevalence of online music streaming services. Regardless, many Gen-Xers confess there was nothing more satisfying than discovering new music during a trip to their local record store. Purchasing physical media made the process even sweeter.
Backyard Sleepovers
Sleepovers for Gen-Zers in 2023 involve staring at their cell phones and making TikTok videos, entirely different from how Generation X spent their sleepovers. “I miss tent sleepovers in backyards and playing games, using Ouija Boards, and telling ghost stories,” one man glumly reports.
Anonymity
The concept of anonymity is lost on the current generation, but for Gen-Xers, it was easy to accomplish. If you wanted people to avoid contacting or finding you, removing your listing from local phone books was easy. That degree of anonymity can’t exist in 2023.
Arcades
As someone who grew up hanging out in honest-to-goodness authentic arcades, I can relate to this man speaking about how great they were! “I miss independent arcades with cabinet video games, pinball, foosball, and pool tables,” he explains. “A place where you could safely hang out with your friends (or by yourself) and keep yourself entertained (and fed with a snack) for less than five dollars. I miss those places.”
Low Cost of Living
Make no mistake about it: life was more affordable way back when. Thanks to inflation, endless services like internet access and streaming television, and endless capitalism, it’s much more expensive to live in 2023 than it was in the 80s and 90s!
Word-Of-Mouth Parties
Unlike in today’s world of Facebook Events and e-vites, Gen-Xers miss the parties that developed out of thin air at a moment’s notice. “Oh man, the word-of-mouth parties were amazing,” one man confesses. “You’d just call Chris and let him know you’re heading to John’s, then he calls three people, and next thing you know, there’s 70 people at John’s house. Half of them were never called but drove by and saw your car, so they grabbed a beer and came over. “
Politics Being Mundane
Countless people report missing mundane politics. Back in the day, political discourse was boring and generally uninteresting. In 2023, however, politics is a hot-button issue that divides and enrages people! Generation X misses when everyone would calmly discuss political issues without the conversation turning ugly.
