Disillusionments of growing older often reveal themselves in the most unexpected ways. As children, we discovered the simplest delights and found awe and excitement in the smallest things. But as we age, we recognize that certain experiences and treasures have lost their enchantment—and sometimes even suck the joy out of our adult lives. Here are twelve things people in an online community mentioned that suck now, even though they found them amazing as kids.

Having 100 Bucks

A hundred bucks as a child seemed like a lot, and 1000 like a million dollars. You would fantasize about purchasing houses, driving a stretch limousine, acquiring all the candy stores in town, and living your fantasy life. Now that you have $100 in your bank account, you know it will be spent within a week on bills and other expenditures, leaving you with nothing even remotely close to what you desired as a child.

Freedom

The independence that comes with becoming an adult made becoming an adult seem like a fantastic prospect. Nevertheless, as children, we fail to realize that with great freedom comes great responsibility.

To prepare her kids, one parent says she always tells them, “Someday, there won’t be anyone to tell you what to do,” which sounds great when you’re a kid and mildly terrifying when you have to run your own life.

Losing a Tooth

First, nobody ever thought an adult who had lost a tooth was cute. Second, if you lose a tooth, it won’t make you any money. When you’re an adult, the price tag is much higher than all the money the tooth fairy gave you.

Getting Mail

One user recalls asking their parents daily if they received mail and were ecstatic when anything came for them. They now fear going to the mailbox as adults since all they will find are bills—and junk mail scams or advertisements.

Getting Letters

Similarly, a second person who was delighted receiving letters as a youngster discovered that they are happier when they do not receive letters as adults. Instead of families slipping you a few dollars, it’s always someone seeking their money!

Spinning in Circles

“Spinning and roller coasters are fun as a child. I tried that as an adult with my kids and felt like I was going to die,” one parent comments. The dizziness takes much longer to disappear, and you feel awful the whole time.

Eating Large Quantities of Candy at Once

While this still tastes great for some adults, the aftermath, one user reports, is a “wicked heartburn.” Another concurred, adding that a headache for them generally accompanies it. A third participant adds that everything except sleeping kills you slowly as an adult. Yet it’s so difficult to sleep.

Many Food Just Taste Badly Different

“Now that I have little kids, I’ve tasted many foods I haven’t had in forever. They’re gross now,” one mom complains. She recently tried a Hostess cupcake for the first time in decades, and it tasted awful—greasy and dry at the same time. “I find that sometimes as well. I can’t tell if my tastes have changed as an adult or the recipes have changed over time.”

The State Fair

Some observe that the state fair experience is no longer as enjoyable, especially now that they must pay for everything. When they returned in 2021 on their own, they spent thousands of dollars and didn’t get to do nearly as much as they did in 2000 when they came with their family.

Staying Awake Till Late

Staying up until the morning as a teen can be fun and appealing, with endless possibilities. But staying awake till two or later in the morning as a working adult will hurt in the morning.

Summer

Summer meant three months of vacation from school when you were a kid. You still have to go to work as an adult, but now it’s unbearably hot, and you’re sweating bullets the whole time.

As a working parent, providing your child with a fantastic summer while maintaining your income and stability is even more challenging. It’s difficult to balance inviting someone to the park to play and worrying about losing one’s job.

Snow Day

On a snow day, making snowballs and snowmen is not on the minds of many adults. One person states that they must either take vacation time or make up those hours, and they spend the entire morning shoveling their driveway. As adults, there is no space for irresponsibility and complete freedom!
