The country is ranked 30th to 35th safest country in the world according to the Global Peace Index (GPI), so with entropy being a popular search, there is quite a contradiction. It might simply be a topic of academic interest or a timely media-based trend; we might never know!
Canada – Woke
“Woke” is a modern word that’s been making its rounds in internet discourse in the past few years. Becoming popular since the 2010s, wokeism is centered around being aware of societal issues such as racism, sexism, and LGBTQ+ discrimination—or being awake about these problems, hence “woke.” It makes sense that Canada, the #2 most progressive country in the world, according to a global survey by U.S. News, searches for the meaning of this word often.
Costa Rica – Job
The word “job,” being the most-searched word in Costa Rica, makes sense in the context of some recent statistics. Though the economy of this country in Central America recovered well from the pandemic and is continuously growing, its unemployment rate has reached an all-time high in the past few years. On the bright side, the unemployment rate decreased by over 3% in the past year, so hopefully, that means those searches are leading to an increase in employment.
Nicaragua – Economics
Nicaragua is a country in Central America nestled in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. This Latin American country is considered one of the poorest in the region. However, its economy has been increasingly improving, increasing modestly in recent years. This might explain the country’s general interest in the word “economics,” which is its most-searched word.
Pakistan – Adjective
“40% of Pakistan is below 14, so probably searching grammar for school work,” one user commented. This message board user is correct—around 40% of Pakistan’s population is younger than 14 years old. In addition, with about 55% of the country’s population being fluent in English, “adjective” as their most-searched word makes sense. Pakistan is the 3rd most English-speaking country in the world in 2021, according to a ranking by World Population Review.
India – Noun
Similar to Pakistan, India’s population is composed of more than 25% young people aged 0–14, which comes up to about 367 million people. With so many young people in school only starting to learn about the intricacies of the English language, it’s no surprise that “noun” is the most-searched word. This goes hand in hand with the fact that India is right alongside the USA as the most English-speaking country in the world!
Philippines – Language
In a country with several islands and regions, it only makes sense that “language” is the most-searched word. The Philippines consists of over 7,000 islands, with nearly 200 native languages to boot. Here, you can be fluent in one province’s language and not know a word of another region’s. Aside from that, there are also over 100 dialects of these existing languages. However, don’t worry about traveling to the Philippines and communicating with locals since most Filipinos can speak English!
Turkey – a.i.
A.I., which stands for artificial intelligence, has become a global interest in the past year. It’s no wonder Collins English Dictionary named it the most notable word of 2023. Turkey has been consistently growing in the field of technology. This country rose from number 65 all the way to number 41 on the Global Innovation Index in 2021. So it makes perfect sense that A.I. is of major interest in Turkey!
USA – Gaslighting
“Gaslighting” is a word that only recently became popular in common, everyday language and conversations in the 2010s. Gaslighting is an act of manipulation to get someone to doubt their own beliefs, perspectives, and thoughts. Surely, the word is being searched to get a clearer understanding of its meaning, not to look up how to do it, right?

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines – Pyroclastic Flow
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is a country known for its natural landscapes. These landscapes include their largest volcano and highest peak, La Soufrière. This active volcano has eight recorded eruptions, one as recent as 2020–2021. No wonder the country’s most-searched word is “pyroclastic flow,” which is a volcanic phenomenon wherein rock, ash, and gases move and sometimes lead to destruction.
Trinidad and Tobago – Osmosis
“Osmosis” is a scientific term that refers to the movement of molecules from high solvent concentrations to low concentrations. However, it is unclear what has made this word the most-searched definition in Trinidad and Tobago. It could be because reverse osmosis is a popular water filtration process in the country. Or perhaps the people there are simply extra interested in science!
Sweden – Feminism
The feminist movement has come a long way since the olden days. Though there’s still much work to be done, the world has seen an improvement in women’s empowerment and representation in different areas. This includes politics.
