Some hobbies(Traditional Hobbies) never go out of style, and in 2024, many activities are still permanently ingrained into our culture. While the fast-moving world of technology has made countless things obsolete, some activities stand the test of time and are just as enjoyable (or more so) as they were decades ago. Today, we’re examining traditional hobbies that survive and thrive in an increasingly digital world.

1. Playing Video Games

When home video games burst onto the scene in the 70s, they changed entertainment forever. In 2024, the industry is still going strong, thanks in no small part to technology itself! Tech has always played a significant role in the video game world, and every advancement makes games, old and new, even more immersive and fun to play. Who knows, without such advancements, video games wouldn’t be the multi-billion dollar industry it is today.

2. Gardening

Despite its reputation for being popular with our grandmothers, gardening has enjoyed increasing popularity recently due to technological advances in the industry. Gardening has always been a relaxing hobby; being outdoors and cultivating your crops is a genuinely joyful experience. In 2024, gardening addicts can take their gardens inside with the advent of indoor-friendly grow kits. The hobby has come a long way from its roots (no pun intended)!

3. Birdwatching

It was not until I was 40 that my fascination with birdwatching entirely took shape. I always scoffed at the people who loved watching birds fly around their backyard, but now here I am with two different bird feeders installed on my porch (with one of them equipped with a WiFi-enabled camera). Birdwatching is another hobby that stands the test of time and has been made even more accessible and enjoyable by technology in recent years.

4. Playing Board Games

As a board game connoisseur, I can attest that playing board games is a hobby that keeps on giving in 2024. Some things never go out of style, and games like Monopoly, Yahtzee, and Scrabble give players as much entertainment in 2024 as they did decades ago. While digital versions of these classic board games exist, nothing tops the satisfaction of beating your friends and family during an honest-to-goodness kitchen table showdown.

5. Card Collecting

In the 80s and 90s, the world was obsessed with all things collecting, and sports cards were a phenomenon that turned many people into total collecting addicts. Thankfully, advancements in technology (and the built-in scarcity of the hobby in general) have made card collecting even more immersive and fun. I’ve wanted to own a Michael Jordan rookie card since I was ten; that will never change, and I’m sure millions of other collectors feel the same!

6. Reading

There isn’t a more straightforward hobby on Earth: You pick up a book and start reading. That’s all there is to it. It’s arguably the most traditional hobby in existence. Like other hobbies, advancements in technology have only made it more accessible. Thanks to devices like Amazon’s Kindle, people have more opportunities at their fingertips than ever before. Reading is a great American pastime that won’t go away anytime soon.

7. Journaling

Not everyone can shape their emotions through words, but those who can love partaking in journaling. It’s an underrated hobby that has proven health and mental benefits. While a person could easily journal on their computer, laptop, or smartphone, there’s nothing like the tactile feeling of putting pen to paper the old-fashioned way.

8. Cooking

For millions of people, young and old, cooking represents tradition, family, and delicious food. Some of the most memorable family moments in people’s lives have occurred while preparing a meal with their loved ones. In 2024, thanks to the emergence of YouTube instructional videos and a wealth of cooking information generally available at our fingertips, cooking has welcomed a much-deserved influx of technology into the hobby.

9. Playing an Instrument

One of the most impressive skills a person can have (other than the ability to speak a second language) is the ability to play an instrument. If you can play the piano, I equate you to the same mental level as Bill Gates; it’s an impressive hobby! The best thing about playing an instrument in 2024 is that sharing your talents with the world is easier than ever. You can create music and upload it to a worldwide audience with just a few taps of your finger; it doesn’t get much better than that for music fans.

10. Fishing

There’s something to be said about physically catching your food; it’s a relaxing and practical hobby. Interestingly enough, it’s a hobby that technology hasn’t completely infiltrated in 2024. The process of grabbing a fishing pole, attaching some bait, and taking your place along a body of water hasn’t changed. For millions of men and women, it’s the perfect way to kill a few hours.

11. Photography

The underlying technology behind cameras has evolved at an alarming rate. The minuscule cameras in our smartphones rival the quality of professional-level digital SLR cameras of only ten years ago. However, the essence of photography remains unchanged despite these technological advancements. It takes a specific type of talent to take amazing photos regardless of the equipment you use, resulting in photography being as popular as ever.

12. Running

Running has been an excellent way to stay in shape for thousands of years, and it’s historically been a free activity undertaken by millions of men and women annually! Technology can change all it wants, but the basis of running will forever stay the same. It’s as easy as lacing up your sneakers and taking off in your neighborhood. However, admittedly, those newfangled fitness trackers are pretty cool; runners from centuries ago would’ve loved them.

13. Camping

While countless advancements have been made recently in the world of camping gear and associated tools, the art of camping in the great outdoors has been largely untouched by the digital world. Is there anything better than spending the day indulging in a few adult beverages over an open fire before finally retreating to your tent for the night? I think not! Some things are timeless; camping is one of those things.

14. Calligraphy

There’s something to be said about someone who can effortlessly and artfully write calligraphy by hand. Artists will tell you that computers can attempt to recreate this style of art, but no machine can come close to the beauty of what a human hand can produce. For many artists, calligraphy is more than a hobby; it’s a passion that earns them tons of well-deserved cash!
