Unexpected pleasures often reveal themselves as we grow older. When you’re younger, there’s nothing as exciting as an all-night party or bar-hopping with friends. You could never imagine that there would be a day when a sale on vacuums could be the highlight of your week. But as we get older, the little comforts bring excitement. The following list of small joys was culled from a recent message board discussion where people shared the things they never thought they would love until they became adults. What would you add to this list?

Sleeping on Clean Sheets

Ahh, the cozy warmth of freshly cleaned sheets. It starkly contrasts many of our youths, where we could fall asleep on a sinking futon. One commenter shared, “Clean sheet night is my favorite night of the year.”

Newly Paved Roads

When you’re used to narrowly avoiding the same potholes every day on your commute, nothing beats a newly paved road where the usually bumpy ride becomes a silky, smooth drive. One user said, “The road next to my apartment complex had its horrible potholes fixed for the first time in two years yesterday, and I screeched like a banshee. I was so happy.”

A Good Night’s Sleep

Boy, I can relate to this one! It was so much easier to sleep in my youth, but as we get older, sleeping through the night without getting up to use the bathroom or waking up randomly in the middle of the night is rare. One parent shared, “I attended a kids-free weekend this past weekend. We all stayed up until 2:30, and all woke up at 8-9ish. Those six hours of uninterrupted sleep on an air mattress in someone else’s home were more restorative than eight hours in my own bed with our kids stumbling in to ask about what bees eat.”

A Weekend With No Plans

Take Timmy to soccer practice on Saturday morning, then go grocery shopping before stopping by the hardware store. Don’t forget the recital Saturday night, then Amy’s dance class Sunday morning before visiting Mom. Sound familiar? It’s rare for an adult to have a weekend where you can relax and do nothing, which is why it’s such a luxurious treat when it does happen.

Your Favorite Cleaning Products

You don’t always realize how attached you are to your preferred cleaning products until you can’t get them anymore. One man said, “Last weekend, I was excited when I saw my grocery store brought back Palmolive lavender dishwashing soap. They stopped stocking it two years ago, and it was greatly missed.”

Getting to Bed Early

Remember when you wanted to stay out all hours of the night having fun? And if you got back home before 9 p.m., it was a lame night. Adulthood is a sharp turnaround where you want to return home in your pajamas before 9 p.m. or the entire next day is ruined.

Events Getting Canceled

Whether the other person canceled or you did, it can be an instant relief. You never foresee how tired or overwhelmed you’ll be when you make plans, but when it comes time to go out and meet that friend, it can be the best feeling when it’s canceled, and you can just cozy up at home.

Naps

One user said it best: “I despised having to take naps as a kid, but now I take one nearly every day and become unhappy when I can’t have one.” I couldn’t agree more. When I was young, I had to be forced into a nap, but now the feeling of a midday nap can be euphoric.

Gardening

It’s such a peaceful, slow-paced, and mellow hobby. It’s no wonder it’s associated with retirement or old age. Gardening requires patience and dedication, but it can be extremely satisfying to watch life grow as a result of your efforts. One avid green thumb said, “There’s something magical about watching that first bit of green break the surface of the compost.”

A Red Light Turning Green as You Approach

Nobody likes waiting at a red light, especially since we’re always limited on time and rushing to get somewhere. When you get that little gift as the light turns green before you stop, you feel like the entire universe is on your side for that split second.

Heading Home

Going out and seeing people is fun, but a cozy feeling comes over you when you know it’s time to go home. One commenter said, “I always say the best part about going out and doing stuff is going home. It makes me appreciate having my own little sanctuary so much.”

Having a lot of debt can weigh on you and leave you with a constant sense of unease. When you finally can make a dent in your debt, it’s a fantastic feeling, like a weight has been lifted. Then you get the dopamine rush of seeing your credit score go up!

New Socks

You can feel that cozy sensation when you slip a brand-new soft sock over your foot. I remember when getting socks for Christmas was a big letdown, but when I treat myself to new socks as an adult, I’m genuinely excited. One user said, “Nothing beats that new sock feel.”

Vacuuming

When your parents made you do chores as a kid, you hated it. It feels so good when you vacuum up all the accumulated dust and marvel at your clean floors. One commenter said, “I love vacuuming!..It relaxes and energizes me at the same time.” Source: Reddit
