It’s an enduring myth to believe that you need to be frugal only if you’re broke. Being frugal is a lifestyle choice closely related to being minimalistic and living a sustainable lifestyle.

Savvy, frugal shoppers start with the idea that you can repurpose and reuse several items to reduce our planet’s burden. It’s a philosophy that helps minimize carbon footprint and save money in the long term.

Of course, sustainable products do cost a little extra money initially. However, savings add up over time. Here are several products you can purchase to be smart, sustainable, and frugal.

Safety Razors

Both men and women use razors. Many buy plastic and disposable ones because they are cheap. However, single-use plastic items are a bane to the environment. You’ll be shocked to learn that our landfills are filled with billions of plastic razors, and there is nothing that we can do about it.

To stop contributing to the problem, you can invest in an old-fashioned metal safety razor. Once you buy it, it will last a long time if you take good care of it. All you need to do is change the blade when it’s no longer sharp.

Refillable Fragrance and Makeup

A smart and frugal shopper will know that being cost-effective does not mean giving up on life’s little pleasures. This includes using self-care products such as fragrance, makeup, and skincare products. Most high-end retail boutiques and perfume houses offer reusable bottles that can be filled with your favorite fragrance at a reduced cost.

The last time I checked, Guerlain and Hermes offered refillable perfume bottles. Other reputed brands offer refillable fragrance and makeup containers, too. Refilling is less expensive than purchasing a product afresh.

Sustainable Clothes

Much like razors, fast fashion has caused immeasurable damage to the planet. Landfills worldwide are filled with polyester and synthetic clothes, which were probably used only a few times. These clothes are essentially plastic and will not even feel comfortable on your skin.

Instead, choose sustainable cotton or other natural fabrics that are sourced ethically. This decision will cost you more than purchasing from your favorite fast-fashion brand, but the products will last for a long time. Hence, you’ll save a lot of money in the long term.

Grocery Shopping Bags

Captain Obvious has always advised purchasing a few cloth-made shopping bags to save money. Instead of paying a few cents or a dollar for that fancy-looking grocery bag at the supermarket, you can carry your own shopping bag and reuse it multiple times.

These bags help you reduce expenses while remaining green and sustainable. The icing on the cake is that staff actually respect you when you carry your own shopping bags. It helps them meet their sustainable goals, too.

Dishcloths

Like fast fashion and disposable razors, paper towels are another primary culprit that clogs our landfills. The problem has become so acute that city authorities worldwide are trying to figure out how to get rid of them sustainably. Worse, they also make their way into our rivers and the sea.

Purchase an absorbent dishcloth to wipe the kitchen counter, utensils, or anything else you previously used those paper towels for. You only need to wash the dishcloth in your washing machine and start wiping things up again. As a result, you save the planet and also your bank balance.

Silicone Baking Mats

Baking is a delightful activity that lets you spend your time resourcefully. Unfortunately, most people have stopped using conventional ovens. Moreover, baking requires parchment paper, aluminum foil, butter paper, and other products that can’t be reused. Over time, this can prove to be very expensive and also unsustainable.

Silicone baking mats are environmentally friendly and easy to clean after use. They are durable and last for a long time. They also help you save quite a bit in a very short period. Get a few silicone baking mats and bid goodbye to those unsustainable parchment papers and foils.

Polyester Sponges

Traditional sponges are not very durable. They absorb dampness and take a lot of time to dry up. As a result, you will soon develop mold issues, which cause health problems. If you need to replace your sponges often, you will also be spending a lot of money.

Although we are against using plastic or other unsustainable materials, polyester sponges aren’t a bad idea. Many of them are manufactured using recycled polyester, and you might get an excellent deal depending on where you live. The best part is that you will not have any health issues due to mold exposure.

Old T-Shirts

If you notice your t-shirts starting to look old and frayed, don’t throw them away yet. As a savvy shopper, you will know that every new t-shirt can be reused after it no longer serves its original purpose.

Use old T-shirts to wipe furniture and absorb liquids. If you are into arts and crafts, they are also great for wiping away paint and glue. As with other things on this list, old T-shirts are a great way to save money and ensure that you are planet-friendly.

Food Storage Containers

It’s essential to have a good collection of reusable food storage containers. Many people purchase disposable freezer containers and paper bags to store food items. These are not sustainable, and after some time, you will notice that you are spending a lot of money on food storage items.

Instead, you can invest in Pyrex and stainless steel containers, which are also durable and healthy. Pyrex, in particular, can be used to freeze food and heat food in the oven. Similarly, stainless steel is break-proof and can store all your groceries and spices safely and securely.

Stainless Steel Water Bottles

Purchasing bottled water is one of the most expensive mistakes you can make in your life. It harms the planet, forces microplastic particles into your body, and wastes your money in the long term. Even if you purchase a plastic bottle with which you can refill water, it will end up in landfills and contaminate the soil anyway.

The solution is to buy an environmentally friendly, nearly indestructible stainless steel water bottle. Of course, it might cost you a little bit more than the plastic bottle, but you will not regret this purchase.

Stainless Steel Filters

Coffee filters are similar to paper towels. Although they look innocuous and seem like they cannot do much harm, our sewage systems, landfills, and even rivers are filled with them. People drink a lot of coffee and frequently use disposable coffee filters. This eats into their budget over time and does not give them brownie points for being earth-friendly.

Stainless steel filters are a solution to this problem. Once you purchase a stainless steel filter, you can filter as much coffee as you want any number of times per day. You just need to wash it under the tap each time, and then you’re good to go.

Metal Utensils

Many people dislike being active and use disposable plates, knives, spoons, and forks. Although it may help you save time and eliminate the need to do the dishes, disposable utensils are costly. They are also environmentally unfriendly.

Instead, invest in metal utensils that last for generations. Think of them as family heirlooms you can pass on to the next generation. It may cost you more than disposable plates and utensils, but you will recover your investment in no time. Choose between carbon steel, cast iron, and stainless steel products. They’re durable and make cooking and eating fun.

Wooden Furniture

There is a certain stigma attached to wooden furniture, especially among youngsters. It’s perceived to be something that older people like, especially those who are moneyed. This misconception is primarily because many people buy plastic and other cheap furniture.

Unfortunately, cheaply priced furniture made from non-sustainable materials only lasts a while. Plastic chairs break and crack very easily, whereas furniture made from medium-density fibreboard (MDF) and plywood is susceptible to water damage. Invest a little bit more money and purchase furniture constructed in solid wood. They last decades and add a touch of class to your decor.

Repurpose Things

Being a wise and frugal shopper is not just about choosing the right product. It’s also about changing your thinking paradigm and adopting the recycling, repurposing, and repairing philosophy. This helps you avoid unnecessary expenses and helps leave a smaller carbon footprint. Make sure to purchase products that last for a long time so that you can pass them on to someone else once you no longer need them.

Learn to Borrow Things

The last and most important thing on this list is to remember that you really don’t have to purchase anything. The smartest shopper avoids shopping unless it is necessary.

Learn to borrow things from your friends and family if you need something just for a day or two. Examples include hardware tools, books, and even clothes. Of course, you can decide what you’re willing to borrow and what you need to purchase.

Remember that being frugal and smart is rooted in minimalism and sustainability. Your purchase decisions must reflect this philosophy.
