Many claim they want to save money but must put their aims into practice. In the case of utility bills, there are some simple methods that each of us can implement to cut costs, but only some carry them out. If you’re serious about reducing monthly expenses, learning how to Save on Utilities is a practical and effective step.

With budgets under pressure, there’s never a better time to implement these processes and return more money to your pocket. Whether you divert the funds towards other household expenses or use the cash for luxuries, it’s worth following these tips.

Each option is easy to implement, and it’s likely to save more money than you think.

1. Get a Smart Meter

Your electricity company should be able to connect you to a smart meter free of charge. Once installed, these devices will tell you how much electricity or gas you use each day, and the smartest ones also highlight the appliances costing you the most money.

Start your money-saving journey by getting a meter fitted, and you can identify the key areas you need to address.

2. Turn off the Lights

It’s a basic example, but many of us still leave the lights on when we vacate a room. It’s among the biggest drainers of unnecessary energy every year, but it’s a simple issue to address.

Statistics show that the average household in the UK wastes around £800 ($1004) yearly by leaving lights on, and Great Britain isn’t even the world’s worst offender.

3. Don’t Forget the Sensor

You don’t need any outdoor sensor lights switched on during daylight hours. This is especially true in the long summer when intruders on your property are unlikely to notice when the light comes on.

Look to fit a timer to any outdoor lights and adjust it regularly so that they come on as night begins to fall.

4. Consider LED Lighting

If your family still has problems turning off light switches, you may want to consider switching to LED bulbs. The Department of Energy in the United States confirms that they can save up to 75% on electricity compared to their traditional, incandescent counterparts.

Even if you switch off lights regularly, LED bulbs can contribute to significant utility bill savings all year round.

5. Add Insulation

Some tips make minor differences to your home’s warmth, such as adding tin foil to the space behind the radiator. These are tiny benefits, and the best thing you can do is to make sure your home is adequately insulated.

Loft insulation needn’t be expensive and relatively easy to install. If you’re uncomfortable doing it yourself, the costs of calling an insulation expert will be recouped over time as your heating begins to run more efficiently.

6. Draft Proofing

Once you’ve addressed insulation, it’s time to address all those unpleasant drafts around the home. Depending on the size of gaps between doors and windows to the outside world, adequate draught proofing could save around $100 annually.

Professional draft proofing costs a few hundred dollars, but there are measures you can take at home. Draft-resistant strips are readily available and easily installed in areas that need them.

7. Boiler Servicing

The best time to service your boiler is during the fall months, just before it works hardest during the winter. This ensures that it’s running at its full capacity and isn’t adding to the cost of your heating and hot water bills.

You may also want to upgrade your boiler. The initial cost can be significant, so discuss this with your supplier and determine how much money a new, more efficient boiler will save over time.

8. Switch off Standby

It’s easy to forget that appliances use money even when switched to standby. We may not be talking about significant amounts of electricity, but the overall costs could add up to $100 a year or more.

Like all entries on this list, the issue is simple to address. Switch off each appliance when you’re not using it, and you will notice those savings over time.

9. Turn Off Faucets When Not in Use

Up to 4 gallons of water are reportedly poured down the drain every time we brush our teeth. If we leave the faucet running, we waste a valuable resource while costing ourselves unnecessarily.

If you brush twice a day, as recommended, that’s a lot of water over a year. Switch off the bathroom faucet when not in use, and remember to do the same in other areas of the house and outdoors.

10. Use Your Dishwasher

While your dishwasher uses water and electricity, it’s cheaper over time than washing your dishes in the sink. The average US household can save around 5,000 gallons of water over a year by loading the dishwasher.

Leaving your appliance to do the dishes is also less time-consuming, and you can use the extra hours you save annually.

11. Avoid Electric Heaters

Standalone electric heaters offer a boost of warmth in winter, but gas central heating is more efficient. Electricity is more expensive than gas, so they are at an instant disadvantage, and many have inadequate thermostats, so they don’t do their job effectively.

Extra clothes, blankets, and hot water bottles are much cheaper if you need additional warmth for a short period.

12. Dry Clothes Outside

The tumble dryer is one of the less efficient appliances in your home. Drying indoors is essential in the long, cold winter months, but you should head outdoors as soon as possible.

It doesn’t have to be hot: A dry, breezy day is enough, and your clothes will also benefit from that lovely outdoor fresh smell.

13. Keep It Clean

On occasions when you have to use an indoor dryer, aim to keep it running efficiently. Ideally, the lint trap should be cleaned after every load, and you should always ensure that the room has adequate ventilation.

Dryers can use up to 6% of an average household’s annual electricity consumption, so it pays to focus more on this handy but expensive appliance.

14. Collect Rainwater

When compiling this list, we’ve looked for methods that provide multiple benefits. In this case, collecting rainwater has two advantages. The first is that it reduces reliance on your outside faucet.

Secondly, plants, flowers, and your lawn should respond better to rainwater, so this is another tip that offers a win/win solution.

15. Consider Smaller Appliances

Air fryers are advertised because they can save money on our electricity bills, and the claim is valid. Smaller appliances such as these are more energy efficient, and the results are delicious.

Microwave appliances fall into the same category, and you only need your oven if cooking a big meal for the family. If it’s a dish for one, aim to cook with something smaller.

16. Keep Your Fridge at Three-Quarter Capacity

Research shows that your fridge works optimally when it is around three-quarters full. If the appliance is packed with no space to spare, it has to work much harder to keep items cool, and your bills will increase.

In contrast, an empty fridge allows more warm air to circulate when you open the door. It works more efficiently at three-quarters full, with cold items cooling down neighboring products naturally.

17. Compare Providers

Comparing your utility providers is always good if a contract does not restrict you. Online comparison websites allow you to do this in just a few clicks, and offers will likely be available throughout the calendar year.

Check prices every six months, and add this task to your diary as part of your money-saving process.
